Abstract

Although violence against women is as old a phenomenon as human existence itself, it took several centuries for its private connotations to be replaced by a rapidly expanding establishment in the public space, from the second half of the 20th century, by the political action of feminist movements. How does the process go, that turns this phenomenon into a social problem and then inserts it as a prioritary issue into the agenda of international organizations and national governments, and finally turns it into an object of public policies? This paper presents a historical survey of this process.
